When an adult is circumcised, what is the process?
Adult circumcisions are typically done under general anaesthesia, so you’ll be asleep throughout.
After your anaesthesia has taken effect, I will use a scalpel or surgical scissors to remove the foreskin from behind the head of the penis. The blood vessels will then be cauterised (heated to stop bleeding), and the remaining skin will be stitched with dissolvable stitches. A sterile dressing will then be applied to your penis.
You will be taken to the recovery area following surgery, where medical personnel will keep an eye on your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, and other vital signs until the anaesthetic effects wear off. After that, you’ll be taken to your room.

After adult circumcision surgery, what to anticipate
- After surgery, your penis will be tender and swollen for about a week. It will help reduce any pain or discomfort by taking over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
- Ice packs applied over clothing or wrapped in a cloth can help reduce swelling. However, they should never be placed on the skin.
- We advise you to take it easy at home for the first week following surgery. You should refrain from heavy lifting or demanding activities for roughly two weeks.
- After surgery, it’s crucial to keep your incision wound clean. Beginning the day after your surgery, take daily showers until the wound has healed, and after passing urine, rinse the area with warm water.
- Wear loose clothing on your lower body for the first week following surgery and comfortable, supportive knickers. If you put petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the tip of your penis, it won’t rub against your clothing.
- Four to six weeks after your circumcision, you shouldn’t engage in sexual activity or masturbation. When it is okay for you to resume sexual activity, consult your advisor.
- Refrain from strenuous activity, contact sports, swimming, or cycling for at least three weeks following surgery.

How long will I have to spend in the hospital after circumcision?

Even if you feel fine, the anaesthetic’s effects could still be present in your body and slow your reflexes. Do not get behind the wheel until you are pain-free and can perform manoeuvres like an emergency stop without discomfort. This usually occurs seven to ten days following your surgery.
When will I feel like myself again after circumcision?
Your penis typically needs seven to ten days to heal after circumcision. For advice, speak with your consultant if your healing is taking longer than this. Normal recovery time following adult circumcision is two to three weeks.
